Grease nipples
Grease nipples (also known as Zerk fittings, grease zerks, or lubrication fittings) are small metal components used in mechanical systems to inject lubricant into bearings and other moving parts. They act as a one-way valve, allowing grease to enter under pressure while preventing dirt and moisture from getting inside.
Key Features and Operation
· Internal Valve: Each nipple contains a spring-loaded ball bearing. When a grease gun is attached and pressure is applied, the ball is pushed back to let grease flow in. Once the gun is removed, the spring pushes the ball back into place to seal the opening.
· Precision Lubrication: They provide a direct path to hard-to-reach areas, such as the internal voids of a bearing, ensuring efficient lubrication with minimal waste.
Common Types:
Straight (Standard) - Most common; used where there is direct, open access.
Angled (45° or 90°) - Essential for tight or enclosed spaces where a straight connection is impossible.
Button Head - Larger, flat-topped fittings designed for high-volume lubrication in heavy machinery like cranes.
